We love to be on the river, kayaking, rafting, canoeing, swimming, playing on our paco pads – we are a river family. We don’t push our kids to get in kayaks but we make it accessible and as fun as we can. Otter has lately become a little single-minded about getting in the kayak. We are going on a river trip in a few weeks and though his momma says he can’t kayak on whitewater, his dad may have given him the impression the he can paddle the flat stuff. The new rule is that he has to be able to go through a complete tumble and not get freaked out before I will let him in a kayak even on the flats of this stretch. So he has gone down to the pond any time we will take him to practice wet exits and swimming and paddling around. The other day I was taking pictures when he found himself unexpectedly upside down next to dad.

This picture was taken just a few moments later and though it was disconcerting, Otter didn’t seem phased by the accidental tip-over. In fact he’s asking to go down right now, but we are trying to get a little further moving today, maybe all of our clothes packed.
