Sorry no refunds!!! I'm sure once he gets used to it he will love it. Booger always did. Zenia beat up little Dan last night when he went out to pee. Poor thing I think she misses big Dan. However She and Cole have become the hot topic on the riverpoint dog grapevine.

Misty,
My first thought was that waking the kids you would tell them that there is no school today. That would certainly be the case here. It looks very beautiful. Throw some snowballs for us.

Oh Mary Mac, I miss you! Dan is great, he healed fine. He doesn't seem to start the fights, its like other dogs automatically go after him. Then he dives in and keeps it going.
We are pretty deep in love though. He is the sweetest guy ever and those eyes - wow. And good with the kids. The pie was yummy. I hope schools going well.

I was raised largely without television, to good and bad effect. The bad bit is that I found myself outside of the popular culture, and this hit me hardest in my years at Pixar where, of course, everyone was heavily steeped in the pop culture.

On the other hand there are other reasons I've had trouble fitting in, so singling that out as a negative when there are all the positive aspects of not having been exposed to years of commercials is kinda silly.

Besides, as I've found myself observing a lot recently: In advertiser supported media, such as television and newspapers, you the reader aren't the customer, you're the product.

I'm still struggling with notions of quality and what the right trade-offs are: I've been very happy buying extremely expensive tools, but I'm still unsure how quality in clothes and shoes works, having had lots of disappointments at the high end and seen that most of what passes for "quality" is just herd appeal.

I grew up in a different kind of ski country: We had the Mount Greylock Ski Club, which at the time was $48 a year, now it's a whopping $150, and members volunteer to run the lifts and do maintenance. Between that and the end of season ski swaps (I was in high school before I got my first set of plastic boots, and wow was I excited!) we managed to ski pretty cheaply.

It is good and we make it almost every weekend in the fall.
Apple Pancake
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tbls sugar
1/2 ts salt
3-4 eggs
1 cup 1/2 & 1/2 (I've used 1%, 2%, cream, and mixtures of all the above and everything seems to work, but 1/2&1/2 seemed best)
1 ts vanilla

2tbls butter
4 large apples (I have little ones and I put 8 or so in) peeled, cored and sliced into 1/2 wide slices.
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 ts cinnamon
               a little lemon (optional)

adjust the oven rack to the upper middle position and preheat to 500º (425º if you are using a cast iron skillet)

Whisk flour, sugar, and salt in md bowl, in another bowl whisk eggs, 1/2 & 1/2 and vanilla until combined. Add liquid ingredient to dry and whisk until no lumps remain. Set aside.

Heat butter in a 10 inch ovenproof skillet (nonstick is nice, I like the cast iron) over medium high heat until sizzling and then add apples, brown sugar and cinnamon. Cook stirring frequently until apples are soft and golden brown. 7 to 10 minutes. Off heat stir in lemon juice.

Working quickly pour the batter around the edge of the pan and then over the apples. Place the skillet in the oven. Immediately reduce oven temp. to 425º. Bake until edges are brown and puffy and have risen above the edges of the skillet, I check at 14, 16 and 18 minutes. Don't forget to use heat pads when touching that skillet. Invert onto serving plate and it will fall when you do. I like syrup on it.

My guideline has been "if it shows up in the news, it's uncommon enough that I probably don't need to worry about it," but then I've always been kind of the curmudgeonly counter-culture type. Although, admittedly, in the context that we hung out in so many years ago, maybe not all that counter-culture.

As for reading: It's so cool to run across you again after all these years! Fantastic to get a reminder of life back then and see where you've taken it.
